Way We Live: Yoga practice may help prevent middle age spread
Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson research centre have found regular yoga practice may prevent middle age spread in normal weight people and promote weight loss in fat people.
The study, which appears in the July/August issue of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, looked at 15,500 men and women, between 45 and 55, who completed a survey recalling their physical activity, including yoga, and weight history. The study measured the impact of yoga with weight change, independent of other factors such as diet or other types of physical activity.
The researchers found that most people gained about a pound a year, a common pattern as people age and don’t adjust their diet. However, both men and women who regularly practiced yoga during the 10-year period gained about three pounds less than those who didn’t practice yoga, said the study’s lead author Alan Kristal.
But researchers found overweight people benefited most from yoga practice. Those men and women lost about five pounds while those who didn’t practice yoga gained about 14 pounds. Kristal suspects yoga’s apparent fat-fighting potential has more to do with increased body awareness than the physical activity itself.
